Peregrine Falcon
This beautiful patient arrived tonight from Giles County after it was found on the ground. This Peregrine Falcon is underweight and sick. We stabilized the falcon for tonight. Plans are to send it to the Wildlife Center of Virginia in the morning for urgent and needed care. Swvawildlifecenter.org #swvawildlifecenter #peregrinefalcon

Diane D’Orazio
Today, prayers are needed for Diane D’Orazio DVM, our friend and a wonderful giving soul that cares for our wildlife and humans in need of help. She is having surgery today. The staff is sending prayers and healing thoughts. Get well soon Diane, we love and miss you.
Update: Diane just called us from her hospital bed! She is amazing! Diane informed us that she felt great AND recruited a volunteer while in the hospital!
Second update: Diane is calling and telling me she is going to get a ride to the center! She needs rest and if she arrives we will escort her home! This lady is phenomenal! Swvawildlifecenter.org
Eastern Towhee
This female Eastern Towhee hit a window several days ago, suffering internal trauma, but has recovered smoothly and is set to be released today! Towhees are common birds that are often heard, not seen, as they are shy and tend to inhabit dense thickets. Their loud “Drink your tea!” call is a familiar sound outdoors this time of year.
Groundhog
This female baby groundhog came to us, orphaned, sick, and in poor condition. Although we don’t think of them being squirrels because of their size, groundhogs belong to a group known as “ground squirrels” that includes chipmunks and prairie dogs. We’re hoping that she recovers, but our prognosis is guarded. #groundhog #swvawildlifecenter swvawildlifecenter.org
Opossums
We need help! Over the last two days alone, we have taken in over 50 orphaned opossums, in addition to more baby squirrels and birds. We would really appreciate donations to help cover the cost of their care. If you can’t donate, please help us by sharing this post. If you can, please donate at https://swvawildlifecenter.org/make-a-donation/
oldest squirrels
Our oldest squirrels are already eating entirely on their own! Once the cold weather and high winds pass, they will be moved outdoors to acclimate before release. Please be on the lookout for baby squirrels on the ground while the severe wind warning is still in effect. If you find one, please keep it warm, do not feed, and call 540-798-9836.
Gray Squirrel
Eastern Gray Squirrel, Case 81-2017 is growing up. This tike came in a few weeks ago with his eyes closed. We feed squirrels until they are 8 weeks old, then transition them to solids. When they are able to crack a nut, then they are ready for outdoor acclimation.
