I 81 Injured Great Horned Owl
Great Horned Owl hit on Interstate I 81 in the Ironto area of Virginia. The owl was placed in a box and placed under the guard rail with Southwest Virginia’s phone number written on the top. The rescuer called leaving directions to the box. Gary Greer, a volunteer offered to locate the box on I 81. Locating the box on the interstate, he then drove it to the center. The large owl suffered from head trauma and blood in the eyes, which made it impossible to do an thorough eye exam. Prognosis was poor and due to her limited vision we had to force feed her the first few days. On the third day she felt well enough to eat 8 mice in one meal! The vet noted her vision had improved but was still poor; yet given time it might improve. We transferred her to the Wildlife Center of Virginia. Her vision cleared and she was sent back to us for release. A farm located within a few miles of rescue was selected for the release site.
