Woodchucks
No table manners! Woodchucks are noisy drinkers.
Mallards
Mallards arrived a few days ago from Blacksburg.
owlet
Late this afternoon, this small and precious 25 gram owlet arrived. The tree he was nested in was cut down and he is the lone survivor. I am cautious on the owl’s outcome due to his/her age. He was cold and immediately regurgitated his last parental meal, which is not a good sign. The owl is now warm and keeping meals down, but the owlet is only days old and the fall is hard for such a young baby ….I am worried.
Released Tri-colored bat
Released Tri-colored bat, formerly known as “pips” or pipistrelle.
They hunt at the edge of forests and near or over water for insects. When capturing prey they increase their body mass by 25 percent in 30 minutes. These bats use their membranes(tail and wing) to restrain their prey.
This patient was offered a smorgasbord of insects and would not eat. Concerned, about his weight loss we offered him a lid of baby meat and his appetite quickly came back. Thanks to Dr. Kelli for the identification.
Barred Owl
Barred Owl released today in Pearisburg, VA. The Owl was found beside the road in January and brought into SWVAWC. We eventually transferred the owl for further care to the WCV then back to us for release.
