Eastern Cottontail
This Eastern Cottontail was unfortunately caught by a cat and injured, landing him a place in rehab. Eastern Cottontails are our most common rabbit species in Virginia, but did you know there are three other native species? The Marsh Rabbit can be found across the coastal plain of southeastern Virginia and is an excellent swimmer. The Appalachian Cottontail can be found west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is typically found at higher elevations in coniferous forests. And last but not least, the Snowshoe Hare, which used to be numerous in western Virginia, is now only found in small patches of Highland County and considered endangered. swvawildlifecenter.org #swvawildlifecenter #easterncottontail #wildlifefacts
