Red bellied woodpecker

Our unkempt Red bellied woodpecker will be wintering at the center. Rescued as a fledge from a Blacksburg car wash this summer, his feathers were saturated with an unknown substance.
After many baths, the damage could not be reversed. We hope with a spring molt he will be releasable.
Fact: Did you know their tongue can extend 2 inches beyond the beak? The tongue has a barbed end which is sticky allowing them to forage crevices for insects. The males have longer and wider tongues to forage deeper crevices.
