Red-bellied woodpecker

Red-bellied woodpecker is one of two that was transferred to us for rehab. We had to separate the duo within a few days of arrival to keep them from pecking each other.
These woodpeckers have tongues that extend 2 inches beyond their beak to gather prey from cavities. They place nuts in tight crevices so they can crack open the nut or leave it for food in the winter.
