Barred Owl

Seeing double? Another Barred Owl patient arrived from Giles County. The rescuer hit the owl while driving the night before. She contacted the vet school and was given our number. Between tears, she explained how this beautiful creature needed help. I assured her she had called the right place.
The owls are 300 grams apart in weight and each healthy prior to their accident. Both have eye injuries and prognosis is guarded.
If you are driving at night and you hear a thump on the car, most likely you have had a collision with an owl. Please pull over to a safe location. Gather the owl up in a box, watch those talons!
Some owls may only be stunned, others suffer eye injuries that need to be checked by our veterinarian. Owl’s eyes take up 3/4 of their head. Impacts with cars or windows easily cause retina detachments not easily detected with out an ophthalmic scope.
